I work on 27th street in Manhattan, and even if most part of the island is safe, our block is just gross. The storefronts consist of shady wholesale places selling knock-off purses and hair extensions. I don't think it particularly dangerous, just disgusting.
One of the highlights of our building, though, is a chocolate factory–Vere. Organic/Vegan dark delishousness. Almost guilt free and so good. Free sampling too. Sadly, they have decided to move out of our building. Friday is last factory sale day and will be celebrated with free wine and unlimited chocolate. Yum.
