Opening night of the 1215 Magna Carta's New York exhibit last night at Fraunces Tavern—New York's oldest building. A huge celebration kicking off the 2009 display of one of only four existing copies of this 800 year old document that was the foundation of the U.S. Constitution.
This historic charter was forced upon King James of England to limit the power of the monarch, and institute democratic laws such as right to a trial by jury, representative government, and freedom of the church. I was told last night that the value of this document is $30 million! When it's not on tour, the document lives at the Lincoln cathedral in the UK.
The exhibit opens today and will go on until December 15. If you are interested in taking a look at the Magna Carta, visit the Fraunces Tavern Museum.
